you know - their first EP is still my favourite.

then Pageant.

I love a bit of "Fall on Me/ Superman/begin the begin" car singing.

I have all the REM I got from my brother saparated into Albums and Singles/EPs as there was too much for me to be able to wade through it, I spent an afternoon getting all of the right cover art for them - in the most Paulish moment of my life.

(yes I've also done that for the Eels)

Did success change them? I think maybe it did. For my money they seem to have lost somehting once they made it to the top, did they gain the world and lose their souls in the process?

By the time they wanted to do their "Get Back" the hard rock still seemed a bit contrived to me, and by the time they got to "New Adventures..." they lost me completly.
(If you want to rock you play "Strange"....not "Eyeliner")

Like a grandparent with Alzheimers, the newer albums have moments when their eyes clear and they talk to you with the clarity that you remember (all the way to Reno, imiatation of life), but for the other 12 tracks it's back to the heartbreaking blank looking out the window and muffled messages that you don't understand that is songs like "airportman".

They used to write some great stuff, then they got very very very wealthy, after that what's there to write about?
