Hi, you may remember me from this M&M's centric post or this one..

Well, its time for another one..

Earlier this year I became aware of a few more limited edition M&M's available in the US. Coconut M&M's and Strawberried Peanut Butter M&Ms. These may end up in some American cany stores in Australia, but not likely. The Strawberried M&M's seem to be made for the Transformers launch, (see link). We were lucky enough to get a few of the Strawberried ones sent over and..well, lets just say it's an acquired taste. So acquired that I think there's half a packet still in the pantry from 4 months ago. The guy at Candyblog has a great post about them.
Didn't get to try the coconut ones...

There has been some dark chocolate mint ones available locally though. They didn't last the day.

Having a bit of a Beatles binge at the moment because I've discovered the 'Purple Chick' bootlegs.

Gooogle them..In a nutshell it appears that somebody has selected the best versions of outtakes and studio recordings and created 'deluxe editions' of each of the albums. Some of the stuff is really interesting , and the others, well...the fans will like it.

Father, son charged over fake OMO imports

A father and son from Sydney's south west have been charged with importing and selling tonnes of fake washing powder.

The owners of OMO asked the Australian Federal Police to investigate when they discovered some Sydney shops were selling a product with its brand name at a cheap price.

A 53-year-old man and his 32-year-old son from Revesby have been charged.

Federal police say they imported about 185 tonnes of fake OMO powder between 2006 and 2007.

The pair will face the Downing Centre Local Court tomorrow.

Which begs the question, why would you make fake OMO?

Observant readers will remember the whole dark chocolate debacle from this post. Well I'm pleased to let you all know that dark chocolate M&M's are now available locally.

So we had a blind taste test, as you do, and realized the Australian M&M's (Dark blue packet) have a creamier texture than their US counterparts (purple packet). The US version also tasted sweeter, but had a slight bitter aftertaste.

And yes, I have written to M&M's to express my appreciation.

Its nice when friends share your obsession.

Some years ago we tried a packet of 'Kettle Potato Chips' in the US of A. And quite honestly they are some of the best chips e have tried.

So for the last few years whenever anyone has gone to the states we have requested chips and tequila. (the tequila is another post..)

Just get a pack or two, use a pin to prick a small hole in the packet, deflate it and reseal the hole with tape. Drip it into a a box and post it off to Paul and Suzanne! More fun than char-grilled dough nuts!

Anyway, thanks to Larissa, who now lives in Singapore, we received a surprise package this week.

Yes thats $11.55 postage..

Worth it? Yes indeedie, and we can make a packet last for weeks.

Well, Suzanne and I have managed to keep Morgan alive for just over a month now, Queensland health will probably send us a gold star for our ‘How to keep your child alive’ chart.

Speaking of gold stars, the federal government promptly sent us 4000 gold stars within a week of registering the little fella, although MBF was first off the rank to update its plastic card with Morgan’s name.

So, what do you do with the baby bonus? We had grand ideas of opening a bank account with the money, but he’d only cash it in sometime in the future so he can go cross country/interstate/overseas while perusing/being pursued by bail bondsmen/ex-lover/best friend/wrongly convicted girlfriend/boyfriend. See, that stuff happens all the time, although I always missed the opportunity to go into a bank vault, open a safety deposit box so I could retrieve a large A3 sheet of paper that had written on it Saving Bond’ or ‘Shares’. I could mock up something and then just glue key-card to the back of it? I could also soak it in tea and burn the edges. Oooh, how about a treasure map, Goonies style.

Went alone, as usual, to the first 2 nights. From all accounts the better of the 4 nights. 2nd row from the front on the first night nd 3rd on the 2nd.

On the second night caught up with some people from the 'Go-Betweens Message Board'. If you think I'm a fan, then think again. There was a gil from Ireland, a guy from LA, several people from the UK and 3 drunken kiwi's, all in town for the 4 concerts and then back home again. Thats dedication that I don't have.

We sat around afterward had a beer and tentatively let out Go-Betweens geek out for a rant and then back again.

Well, I hunted and searched and ended up driving to the Northern Beaches of Sydney looking for those little yellow bits of plastic. Once hunted, and killed, the desire was gone.

Speaking of hunting...

So I brought my first 'Star Wars' figure since 1978, thats for personal use mind you, not counting gifts.

I was giddy from working for the first time since March and I had a credit card, goddamit.

So it was limited edition, only available for a short time, so I brought 2, one for me and one for ebay. Thinking I could sell one to pay for the shipping, and perhaps the purchase price, of the other. Kinda like having a baby to provide bone marrow for its brother with Leukemia.

Although ebay is having a hard time getting them from me.

And if you think I'm taking it out of the box your surely mistaken, and I'm looking at you, unborn child of mine, Go play with your Lego's or Dolls and leave daddy's toys alone. (I'm sure Uncle Syme will let you play with HIS Star Wars figures)

A few years ago M&M's in the USA released a dark chocolate M&M to coincide with the release of 'Revenge Of The Sith'. Well, I was pretty exited and waited, and waited and waited for the product to hit the Australian shelves.

Well Australia did get a 'Come to the dark side' campaign, but it featured just the ordinary milk chocolate M&M's dressed as some sort of Sith lord, go figure, so I waited some more.

I finally wrote to M&M's Australian pleading and begging to them to release the product in Australia. But to no avail. Chalk it up to another product line I can get only in the US of A.

So I then started to frequent those overpriced 'foreign' candy stores you find in the center isle of the mall, and you know what, still couldn't find them. I ranted and raved and ranted some more, but no dice. If I wanted a Snifter, a Twisler or a Yourkie bar, no problems, Dark chocolate M&M's? No sir, cant help.

So.. earlier this year the Dark M&M's became a 'permanent menu item' in the states, so it was just a matter of time.. jump cut to last Sunday, having a cup of tea with an old friend who said in passing, hey O like those dark chocolite M&M's. Half an hour latter, after paying off my wife to look the other way, I had in my over exited hands, 10 packets of overpriced dark chocolate M&M's.

Was it all worth it?

Oh yes it was..

Ive started to make a wall mural for PS2beta's wall. Trying to keep it all fairly non-gender-specific, which is fairly hard, so I have decided to go down the 'Jungle Theme' route.

This will give me the opportunity to draw lots of animals, nice broad brief.

So today I started sketching and drawing on MDF. Yes,yes I know, it looks very boy-ish, but I like monkeys, so monkeys were first of the rank..

Well I finally made it into egg records in the City Mall. One of the better secondhand record shops in Brisbane.

Still going through a Mob Mould phase and came out with the singles to 'A good Idea' (Copper Blue) and 'Your Favorite Thing' (File Under Easy Listening). Actually I had forgotten that the last album even existed until I saw the sleeve design for the single.

They also had a copy of 'Modulate' and a copy of 'Body OF Song', both for $9.90, but I had forgotten which one was the electronica album and which was the Husker Du-ish one. Jimbo, they should both be on the racks still.

Also pucked up the single 'Don't You know' by the Troggs/R.E.M. Recorded during their Out of Time/Automatic Era.

So I've discovered that my group photos on hr flikr account wont show up untill they are vetted by the flikr PTB.

No problems, I will probably post here, on the April 20 Blogspot site and on flikr, both my account and on the April 20 account. The April 20 account photos will show up in their own good time.

Both me and the missus are working tomorrow, so expect a flood of activity in the late hours as both of as are partaking this year. I am working in a small room with 2 computers, so I'm going to find an 'angle'. Next door my co-workers, Alex and Courtney are also twenny-ing, they both work together in a small room with 3 computers, so they can go crazy.

The Tanya Donelly fans over at Slumberland did'nt quite get it, but give them points for trying. I will post a link on the April 20 Blogspot site if anything happens..

As for the R.E.M. fans, so far nothing.

April 20' the second

Whohoo. The lead up to April 20 has started.

Ive posted invitations on a R.E.M. fan-site and a Tanya Donelly (Breeders, Throwing Muses, Belly) fan-site. So I guess we have gone international.

I'm working this year so lots of photos of a sterile room with Final Cut Pro and an Avid. At least I'll be able to show the world my lunch again.

The drive home takes about 45 mins, so Suzanne may even get a cameo.

Shipping in late September will be Paul/Suzanne v2.0 (Public Beta vers).

To date, no final specs have been released as the project is still being coded, although the following pre-release screen shot has been made public:

In my humble opinion the last great ‘old style’ REM album was ‘New Adventures In HiFi’(NAIHF). If you’re after ROCK, then (as Syme mentioned) its ‘Monster’ hand down.

But R.E.M where never a ROCK band, well not really, They did covers of ‘Toys In The Attic’ (Aerosmith) and ‘Strange’ (Wire) but they also did covers of ‘Wichita Linesman’ (Glen Campbell) and ‘8 Miles High’ (The Byrds) and I think spiritually REM come closer to the last 2 than the first 2. Whatever way you paint them, they are good ole’ boys that grew up on rural Georgia in the 70’s.

Yes they seem to have lost their way, many commentators mention that the downward slide coincided with Bill Berry leaving, siting album sales of ‘UP’, ‘Reveal’ and ‘Around the Sun’ as proof of this. Personally ‘Up’ is one of my favorite albums, no so much a rock album as such, but it has some good points nevertheless. ‘Reveal’ I like too, but there is only a few songs on ‘Around the Sun’ that I can listen to – One more like that and I would have to call it quits.

The producer for their next CD is a guy called Jacknife Lee, who produced U2’s last album, so there is hope yet.

BTW, they are releasing a version of John Lennon's ‘#9 Dream’ with Bill on drums for a charity project. Have a listen.

Ive got a PDF on the desktop breaking down the first hardcover printing of 'The Acme Novelty Library' into its various episodic parts, explaining what's new and whats been published previously. So, Morrissey is reported to be in talks to write England's next Eurovision entry. Seems the Smiths is cool again, not too sure when that happened, apparently he’s very big with the emo kiddies. Morrissey also has a pretty mega following in the Hispanic community in California and Mexico – go figure?

The Smiths box set still has to materialise, a bogus track list was posted recently on Morrissey-solo.com but quickly shot down. Rumour’s abound that it will contain cleaned up versions of the Troy Tate sessions as well as B-sides and some live cuts. There is a 12 minute version of ‘The Queen Is Dead’ that Marr has been talking about recently, and Andy Rourke has been playing selected live tracks on his Manchester radio show.

I left the south (again), travelled north (again).

So its goodbye to the Gold Coast and hello to Wilston again. Same phone number as before but a new PO Box. Suzanne’s still working on ‘the American Feature Film’ and I’m, how they say, between engagements. Gave Suzanne my word that I will ‘simplify my life’ and get rid of much of the crap that I’ve been dragging around for the last 13 or so years. Problem is much of that stuff hasn’t seen the light of day for 12 of those 13 years and much time has been wasted pouring over old photocopies and rediscovering mail art not seen since 1990.

What I did discover in my rummage was an old C-90 of ‘Tears for Fears’ b-sides. A few years ago I converted these to MP3 and have been sitting on the ipod. I was at JB HiFI last week and discovered (on special) of the re-issued 2 disk ‘Songs From the Big Chair’ with the same B-sides, but without the 20 year old tape hiss and vinyl pops and hiss.
